The Happiness Legend!? Big trouble at the clock tower
Item stolen: A dollAt this point we are still getting the brief background info on Meimi/Saint Tail at the episode opening .
In homeroom the girls and Meimi are talking about the new amusement park, "Wonder Gardens" that has just opened. Meimi exclaims she loves amusement parks, and one of the girls says she was just there. Everyone wants to know with whom, and she is able to produce a picture of herself and her date. The girls are in an uproar and the girl quickly changes the subject by telling them that the clock tower has fabulous statues, made by a famous sculptor that carry the jinx of true happiness for the couple that get to view them together. Naturally this means that the she and the boy in the picture are destined for such happiness. Meimi quietly wishes she could go on a date and Ryoko picks in her, asking if she would like to go with Asuka Jr. Meimi cant believe such an idea and says as much. Asuka Jr., upon hearing this, rounds on her, and the usual fight breaks out. Asuka Jr. wants to know why hes being called a jerk, and Meimi says its because he cant even catch Saint Tail. He says that even if he did he wouldnt show her to Meimi. Meimi wonders if Saint Tail is his pet, at which point Asuka Jr.s friends call him away. Following him with her eyes Meimi is surprised to see Seira in the hall beckoning her.
Alone in the chapel Meimi wonders whats up and Seira says she has a favor to ask Saint Tail.
It seems a small child has borrowed a doll from a friend, and while at Wonder Gardens, tied her balloons around the doll. When the clock chimed, and the statues immerged, the wind caught the doll, carrying it up to the statues where it became entangled. The mother appealed to the parks director, but was told the doll was just a toy and to forget about it.
Seira says the doll has to be reclaimed by Sunday, tomorrow, was its owner will be coming to collect it. Meimi accepts the condition of the theft and hurries home.
At home she finds her parents awaiting her arrival. They are both very dressed up and tell her that they, as a family, are going to the Wonder Gardens. Meimi goes to change her clothes, annoyed that her parents are using her as an excuse to go to an amusement park.
Once at the park Meimi rushes ahead to be there when the clock chimes in a few minutes, to see if the doll is still there. A couple bumps into her, pushing Meimi into the arms of Asuka Jr.
Each one is surprised to see the other and Meimi, smacking his hand away, asks him why he is there. To have fun of course. Turning to face the clock Asuka Jr. wonder aloud if this is the clock tower all the girls are talking about. Meimi assures him it is, and as the clock begins to strike thinks of the jinx. But the statues do not appear. Nearby the director turns to an aid and questions him as to why the clock didnt work. Asuka Jr., badge in hand, approaches them and asks as well. The aid suggests a malfunction, and the director says that there had been a repair crew with the clock earlier. The aid runs off to see what can be done. Asuka Jr. tells Meimi it was a malfunction, and leaves her. Meimi is very depressed by this missed chance, when a child next to her looses her balloon. This reminds Meimi of her job just as her parents arrive. Meimi says she wants to buy ice cream, and slips away yet again.
Sneaking into the back of the clock tower Meimi begins to look around, only to bump into a carnival costume. Momentarily alarmed she gasps. Catching her breath she sees, high above her, the doll still caught on the statue. Two men, posing as repairmen, are in the act of replacing the real statues with copies, so they can sell the originals. Rising in indignation Meimi stands up into one of the costume, making a noise that attracts the two men. They search, briefly, decide it was their imagination and return to the statues. Meimi, inside a large headed bunny costume, sighs with relief. Removing the head she declares she wont allow it!
In town, dressed as the pink bunny, Meimi is handing out fliers for the Wonder Garden and gives one to Asuka Jr. On the back of it there is a challenge from Saint Tail, announcing that she will come for the doll that evening.
The problem with this statement is that in Japanese the word for doll is the same as the word for statue. Asuka Jr. believes Saint Tail is coming for the valuable statues. He chases the rabbit, only to find Meimi bundling the costume into a sack, to return later. Asuka Jr. arrives then and begins questioning her about the statues, and the happiness jinx linked to them. Meimi, surprised by his questions, wonders if he is trying to ask her out on a date. He finishes by asking her if she thinks the statues are expensive. Meimi, confused by this turn in the conversation agrees they must be valuable. Asuka Jr., incensed with his assumption regarding the theft runs off. Meimi is left standing, gaping, and screams, "I hate him!"
Eye Catch
Back at home Meimi is trying to cheer any angry Ruby up. Ruby is annoyed she didnt get to go to the park as well. Laughing Meimi collects her cologne locket, promising to take Ruby next time. Ruby brightens at the statement.
As Meimi is lowering herself out the window her mother knocks on the door, seemingly with clean laundry. After several attempt to get her daughter to open the door her father joins her, and they enter the room, to find Meimi sitting in the open window. Her father wonders what she is doing, and Meimi explains she is going out for some juice. "Through the window?" her mother wonders, and Meimi says why not, and leaves. Mom laughs, "Thats my girl."
At the chapel Meimi becomes Saint Tail, and we see her leaping through the moon lit night to the very black amusement park.
In the park the director is worried that the very unique statues are in danger of being stolen, but Asuka Jr. assures him that there is a reason for Saint Tails coming. Asuka Heiji arrives saying this time that might no be the case. It seems there have been other thefts of statues, and Saint Tail could be the perpetrator. Asuka Jr. defends her, saying theres no way she would do such a thing, but his father thinks he is being to easy on the thief. One of the repairmen arrives then and says they are done. Suspecting nothing the director lets them go. Asuka Jr. says that Saint Tail will arrive when the statues appear, at which point the clock spins wildly, arriving at midnight.
As the chimes start the bewildered policemen mill around in confusion. The statues immerge, and in an explosion of confetti a sign appears saying, "These are fake."
The director cant believe it, and Asuka Jr. wonders when she could have switched them. Suddenly the searchlights go on, and the police are once again in a panic, wondering where she is. Asuka Jr. tells them to remain in position as Saint Tail leaps onto the Wonder Garden Castle. She cant believe they havent figured it out yet, and then sees the would-be thieves getting away. Vowing to stop them she is suddenly the focal point for all the floodlights. Asuka Jr. says he wont allow her to use the darkness as a cover and yells to his officers to train the light on her face; he wants to see her face. Smiling Saint Tail says if he wants Saint Tail, shell give him Saint Tail, and produces her wand
"Its Showtime!"
Suddenly the searchlights are moving on their own and the lights in the park all come on, and the rides start up. Asuka Jr. wonders whats happening even as the director says he didnt order the lights on. Running along the edge of the castle, slightly behind her own huge shadow, Saint Tail heads for the escaping thieves, landing before the truck in a shimmering globe of light. Momentarily blinded the driver veers off the road, into a garden, and crashes into a wall. The statues, unsettled by the events, rip through the canvas walls, exposing the true crime. Asuka Jr. rounds on his father, who nods in agreement, and then the older detective yells, "Arrest them." The gathered officers make a human pyramid atop the two thieves. Asuka Jr., smiling, turns to the truck, just in time to see Saint Tail remove the doll from the statue.
As she runs off he follows, only to find her atop a food stand, doll in hand, the balloons blocking her face. The balloons explode, even as Asuka Jr. calls to her, and she easily flips over his head, running for the castle. With a wave of her wand the castle doors open, and hundreds of Saint Tails run out. Asuka Jr. demands to know if the park has a Saint Tail parade, and the director says of
course not. Saint Tail then tells us that shell be next to invisible in a sea of Saint Tails, and looking back at Asuka Jr. mistakenly locks eyes with him. He knows its her. Running harder she is amazed to have him following.
He chides her, saying hell always know her. She runs to the Ferris wheel and leaps into an open car. Asuka Jr. climbs up after her, even as the officers below are warning him that what he is doing is dangerous. Saint Tail, clutching the doll can hardly believe him. As he rests for a moment she shows him the doll, and says she has taken what she said she would. Asuka Jr. asks, "Doll?" and finally figures it out.
Saint Tail reflects on their earlier meeting, thinking to herself she would have been happy if he had asked her on a date but this was the next best thing, and she tells him that this encounter was like a date and that she had fun. Blushing Asuka Jr. tells her to not joke, and he leaps to her carriage. Climbing up he is met with a shower of streamers and confetti that almost blow him from the carriage. He gathers himself in, only to find hes alone.
Back with the police the director thanks Asuka Jr. for retrieving the stolen statues, as Asuka Heiji proudly looks on. Heiji says these are indeed the thieves he was after, at which point Asuka Jr. say that he thought it was odd that Saint Tail would be stealing such an item as the statues.
In the dark room of a little girl Saint Tail lays the doll beside her sleeping form, and warns her against tying balloon onto precious items. Back outside she looks at the amusement park in the distance and wonders about the jinx, only to smile at the richness of her nights.
